Queer Scene in Spain

Queer venues in Spain are concentrated in a handful of big cities and resort towns. In Madrid the centre is Chueca, the neighbourhood around Plaza de Pedro Zerolo, where bars, cafés and shops sit close together. One long-standing address there is LL Bar at Calle de Pelayo 11, which puts on drag and strip shows every night. Axel Hotels, a chain aimed explicitly at LGBTQ guests, runs a hotel at Calle de Atocha 49 in the Barrio de las Letras.

Barcelona's scene is based in the Eixample. So many bars and clubs are packed into the area that locals call it the Gaixample. At Museum, Carrer de Sepúlveda 178, pop videos play among plaster statues, and the room usually fills up only after midnight. Axel also has a hotel here, in a modernista building.

Sitges lies southwest of Barcelona. Its bars are spread through the lanes of the old town, and Parrots Pub at Plaça de la Indústria 2 has been there for more than thirty years, with a large terrace facing the street.

On Gran Canaria nearly everything happens in the Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Inglés. By day it is a shopping centre; at night its floors belong to bars and clubs. Mantrix, on the fourth floor, is where many people end the night.

Other destinations include Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol, Ibiza and Valencia, where the Russafa district is known as the community's nightlife area. Same-sex couples have full legal equality across the country, though dedicated queer venues are rare outside the places named here.
