No bars, cafés or saunas with an openly queer clientele are listed for Friedrichshafen in any checked guide — unlike what earlier versions of this text suggested, there is no 'established queer infrastructure' of multiple venues — the town is simply too small for that, even though it has plenty of general bars and cafés.
What the city does have instead is visibility of a different, political kind: Friedrichshafen is led by Simon Blümcke, an openly gay mayor — a rarity for a town in the fairly conservative Lake Constance region, and one that has drawn attention well beyond it.
Once a year, the community comes together in force: Pride Friedrichshafen starts at Franziskusplatz by the train station and moves through downtown in a march. Current dates and meeting points are shared by the organizing group on Instagram, along with photos from past editions. His election is seen locally as a notable sign of tolerance, even though it hasn't translated into a bar scene of its own.
For bars, clubs or a sauna, it's worth heading to larger towns around the lake or on to Ulm, both reachable by car — Friedrichshafen itself has no venue or club of its own to offer.
