Potsdam - Guide for Gays, Lesbians and Queers

Potsdam, the capital of Brandenburg, is known for its palaces and parks, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its queer infrastructure is modest by comparison. Potsdam has no dedicated gay bar, club or sauna. For that kind of nightlife, most people head to Berlin, which is a short ride away on the S-Bahn.

What Potsdam does have are established community spaces run by associations. The Regenbogenkombinat on Dortustraße is a meeting and event space run by the state association AndersARTiG. It hosts groups for young people and adults, readings, discussions, workshops and film nights, and offers counselling on coming out, transition and sexual health. It is usually open on weekdays from midday into the evening.

Katte e.V. runs its counselling centre on Jägerallee. The association offers advice on HIV, coming out, migration and social issues, provides testing, and has set up a specialist pension advice service for queer people. It asks visitors to book appointments in advance where possible. The office also stocks community magazines, event listings and free condoms.

Smaller meeting points round things out. The Heidehaus community centre in Babelsberg holds an open queer afternoon once a month. The local association Regenbogen Potsdam hosts a get-together every two months, organises film nights and the annual Bike Pride. It also keeps a list of queer-friendly places in town, including cafés and pubs that describe themselves as welcoming, though none of them is a gay venue as such.

So if you visit Potsdam, expect fewer places to go out and more places to meet people from the local community. The associations post current dates on their own channels.
