Fuerth - Guide for Gays, Lesbians and Queers

Fürth does not have a permanent queer bar, club or sauna of its own. Queer life here is organised mainly through associations and events, and for everything else people head to Nuremberg, which borders the city directly.

The most important local player is Frankenpride e.V., a volunteer association for Middle Franconia. It runs the Christopher Street Day march in Fürth each summer and the Pride events in Ansbach. Under its umbrella there are also the Main-Riders, a queer motorcycle group that welcomes non-riders too and holds an open monthly get-together in Nuremberg, and the Franken Fetisch Queers, who usually organise a monthly pub crawl that moves between Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen. Both groups describe themselves as hetero-friendly.

The one venue in Fürth with a regular link to the scene is the Grüner Baum, a traditional inn on Gustavstraße in the old town. It hosts the official opening party of Fürth's Pride, with DJs and free entry. Outside that weekend it is an ordinary Franconian inn rather than a gay bar.

For advice and community, the main address is Fliederlich e.V., the queer centre in Nuremberg on Sandstraße near Plärrer. It has been active since the late seventies and sees itself as a contact point for the whole Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen area. Its staff and volunteers offer general queer counselling as well as specific services for young people, lesbians and parents, plus an information service in Erlangen. There are many groups, including meetings for gay men of different ages, a senior group, a group for young trans people and one for rainbow families. A monthly open meeting is a good first point of contact for newcomers.
