About the LGBT Scene in Africa

Africa poses significant challenges for the LGBTQ+ community. Homosexuality is still illegal in many countries, and some have severe penalties. South Africa is a notable exception – it was the first African country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2006.

Despite the difficult situation, there are brave activists and growing Pride movements in cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Nairobi. Johannesburg Pride is the largest on the continent. Countries like Botswana and Angola have recently abolished laws against homosexuality, giving hope for further progress.
