Syracuse - Guide for Gays, Lesbians and Queers

Syracuse has no gay bar, sauna or club whose address can currently be confirmed. The main queer points of contact in the city are its associations.

Arcigay Siracusa is the local branch of Italy's largest LGBTQIA+ association and has been active for decades. Over the years it has counted a few thousand members, which makes it one of the larger committees in Sicily. It offers advice and sends volunteers into schools together with a psychologist to talk with pupils and teachers about homophobia. On World AIDS Day it runs events with the Italian Red Cross, Anlaids and the infectious diseases department of the Umberto I hospital. It is also part of the committee that organises Siracusa Pride each summer. Contact is mostly by email and through the association's social media pages.

Stonewall GLBT Siracusa is a second, independent association. It sat on the Pride committee for several editions and left it during a dispute over the choice of godmother. Agedo is the association of parents and relatives of LGBTQ people and helps families looking for support.

For bars, clubs and a wider choice, the nearest city is Catania, about 60 kilometres north. Arcigay Catania is active there, and in late June the Catania Pride march runs from Piazza Borgo to Piazza Università.

Italy recognises same-sex partnerships as civil unions (unione civile). For questions about HIV and sexual health, Arcigay Siracusa is a sensible first contact because of its work with the hospital's infectious diseases team.
