About the LGBT Scene in Perugia
Perugia has no queer bars, cafés or saunas that the common gay travel guides can confirm. The capital of Umbria sits on a hill above the Tiber valley, has a little over one hundred and sixty thousand residents and two universities, including the Università per Stranieri for international students. Bars and restaurants in the old town draw a mixed, young crowd.
The most important queer address is Omphalos LGBTI+ on Via della Pallotta. The association runs an anti-discrimination center and a counseling service, offers HIV and syphilis testing and legal advice, and operates Casa Rosa, a safe house for LGBTQ+ people in need. It also has topic groups, support for migrants and a documentation center.
Once a year, in June, the city becomes the meeting point for the queer community from all over Umbria. That is when Umbria Pride takes place, carried by Omphalos and an alliance of more than sixty organizations. The march starts at the Arco Etrusco, the Etruscan city gate, and several thousand people walk through the city.
Anyone looking for queer nightlife heads to Rome or Florence, each about two hours away. People come to Perugia for the medieval old town, the views over Umbria and the chocolate that has been made here for a long time. Outside of Pride, a visit is best planned around those.
