Chelmsford's queer scene centres on one fixed address: Bar Plus on Moulsham Street, just south of the city centre, is the city's only dedicated LGBTQ+ bar. Cocktails, drag cabaret and themed nights make up the regular programme, and the bar has become a particularly safe space for the local trans community. Sundays bring a second fixture: G Sundays at Popworld on Springfield Road has run for over 18 years and is one of the longest-standing queer club nights in the region.
During the day, The Art Place in the Meadows Shopping Centre offers a quieter meeting point. On the first Sunday of every month, queer adults, trans+ people and young people gather there for open creative socials. During Pride month, local artists repaint shop windows along the march route with colourful murals, and many businesses display 'Chelmsford For All' stickers in support.
Chelmsford no longer has a dedicated sauna or cruising scene. Suite.429, the venue once listed in gay directories, has closed for good, and nothing has replaced it locally. Anyone looking for that heads to London instead, about 30 minutes away by train.
