About the LGBT Scene in Worcester

Worcester has no gay district. The only dedicated LGBT bar is The Flag on Lowesmoor, not far from Foregate Street station. It works as both bar and club, with a dance floor, DJs and late party nights, and it serves the LGBT community while welcoming everyone. The building used to be the Brewery Tap and later Goodfellows. There is no gay sauna in the city, and no café aimed specifically at queer customers.

Much of Worcester's queer life happens in groups rather than bars. Out2gether is a social and support group for LGBTQ+ adults in Worcester and South Worcestershire. It meets mostly online, with quizzes, a book club, a film club, creative writing and meditation, and Trans2gether is its group for trans people. Parents of LGBTQ+ children can turn to the New Road Parents' Support Group, which meets once a month. Young people aged ten to seventeen have Vesta Tilley Youth, a youth club in the city centre.

The youth club takes its name from a local figure. Vesta Tilley, born Matilda Alice Powles in Worcester, became one of the best-known male impersonators of the British music hall. She performed as a dandy in men's clothes and was for years the highest-earning woman in England.

Worcester is also where Worcester LGBT (Asylum, Support, Network) started. It began as an online campaign group in the city and has grown into a national membership network for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and refugees. The University of Worcester has its own LGBTQ+ student network, which works with Worcester City Pride on events. For a wider choice of bars, clubs and support services, the nearest option is Birmingham's Gay Village around Hurst Street.
