On the lakeside promenade in Überlingen, in a listed building from 1876 that originally served as a gymnasium, the Freie Kunstakademie teaches painting, drawing and other artistic techniques to students of all ages. Courses draw partly on the tradition of Cezanne's school, complemented by exhibitions that showcase participants' work. The view over Lake Constance and the historic fabric of the building give lessons a setting rarely found at an ordinary art school. As a non-profit institution, the academy also opens its rooms for outside events, including, on occasion, gatherings tied to the local queer community. For anyone interested in art by the lake, the building is more than just a place to take a class.
