Tampere - Guide for Gays, Lesbians and Queers

Tampere's queer venue scene centres on one place: Nightclub Mixei on Itsenäisyydenkatu in the Tammela district, not far from the railway station. Mixei has been running for more than thirty years and is the oldest gay nightclub still operating in Finland, as well as the only one in the Pirkanmaa region. There is a cosy bar downstairs and a dance floor with a stage upstairs. On Wednesday evenings the upstairs bar opens for bingo and karaoke, and on Fridays and Saturdays a DJ plays pop until the early hours. The club also has a lounge area, board games and unisex toilets.

No dedicated gay sauna or second established queer café is documented for Tampere. Instead, the community relies on Pirkanmaan SETA – Sinuiksi ry, which has been active for more than fifty years and is the oldest member organisation of the national Seta federation. It runs a national helpline, offers anonymous HIV and syphilis testing and organises peer groups. Several times a year it also throws Leimarit, its long-running party series, often held at Fame Club on Satakunnankatu.

In June, the Pride week Manse Pride brings extra visibility to the city, with a march and a programme put together by many different groups.

The rest of the year, the scene stays concentrated on a few reliable fixtures rather than a wide spread of bars and cafés. For visitors, that means starting with Mixei and then checking for upcoming Leimarit or Pride dates. Most of the association's activities are in Finnish, but newcomers are still welcome to join.
