STI Testing: Where and How Often

Regular STI testing is a crucial part of sexual health. Here's what you need to know about getting tested.

How Often Should You Test?

  • If sexually active with multiple partners: Every 3-6 months
  • If on PrEP: Every 3 months (required for prescription)
  • If in a monogamous relationship: At least annually
  • After potential exposure: As soon as possible, with follow-up tests

What Tests Should You Get?

A comprehensive screening includes:

  • HIV (blood test or rapid test)
  • Syphilis (blood test)
  • Gonorrhea (urine, throat swab, rectal swab)
  • Chlamydia (urine, throat swab, rectal swab)
  • Hepatitis B and C (blood test)

Where to Get Tested

  • Sexual health clinics (often free or low-cost)
  • LGBTQ+ health centers
  • Your regular doctor
  • Planned Parenthood (US)
  • Home testing kits (for HIV and some STIs)
Important: Always request three-site testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia (throat, genitals, rectum) if you have oral and/or anal sex. Urine-only tests miss many infections.
