Regular STI testing is a crucial part of sexual health. Here's what you need to know about getting tested.
How Often Should You Test?
- If sexually active with multiple partners: Every 3-6 months
- If on PrEP: Every 3 months (required for prescription)
- If in a monogamous relationship: At least annually
- After potential exposure: As soon as possible, with follow-up tests
What Tests Should You Get?
A comprehensive screening includes:
- HIV (blood test or rapid test)
- Syphilis (blood test)
- Gonorrhea (urine, throat swab, rectal swab)
- Chlamydia (urine, throat swab, rectal swab)
- Hepatitis B and C (blood test)
Where to Get Tested
- Sexual health clinics (often free or low-cost)
- LGBTQ+ health centers
- Your regular doctor
- Planned Parenthood (US)
- Home testing kits (for HIV and some STIs)
Important: Always request three-site testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia (throat, genitals, rectum) if you have oral and/or anal sex. Urine-only tests miss many infections.
