Hamburg's queer scene is spread across several districts. An overview of St. Georg, the Kiez and the Schanze, with bars, cafés, counselling and Pride.
Hamburg does not have one gay quarter but several. The scene is spread across St. Georg, the Kiez in St. Pauli and the Schanzenviertel. If you know what each area is known for, you can plan an evening without detours. This guide sorts the districts and names venues that Hamburg Tourism and other city guides list. Opening hours change, so check before you go.
St. Georg around Lange Reihe
St. Georg sits right by the main station and, according to Hamburg Tourism, is a scene hotspot, with Lange Reihe as its main street.
Café Uhrlaub (Lange Reihe 63) and Café Gnosa (Lange Reihe 93) are well-known meeting points for breakfast and the afternoon. City guides describe Gnosa as a place for gay men and lesbians. For dance nights, Wikivoyage names M&V Bar (Lange Reihe 22). More bars are close to the station: Bellini (Danziger Straße 63), Kunterbunt Bar (Bremer Reihe 20), Extratour (Zimmerpforte 1) and Pick Up Gay Bar (Zimmerpforte 2). Since the 1980s there has been 439 at Vereinsstraße 38, popular with musicians and artists.
In winter, St. Georg hosts Winter Pride, the city's queer Christmas market (Lange Reihe 4).
St. Pauli and the Kiez
The Kiez is Hamburg's entertainment district, and the queer scene is part of it. Piccadilly Bar (Silbersacktwiete 1) is described as the oldest gay bar on the Kiez. Wunderbar (Talstraße 14) counts as a cult bar from the 1990s. Olivias Show Club on Große Freiheit (no. 27) puts on cabaret and drag. For club nights, Hamburg Tourism mentions Nikki Tiger (Talstraße 9) and Uebel & Gefährlich (Feldstraße 66).
The Kiez is often crowded and loud, and not every group there is queer-friendly. More on that under safety.
Schanze and Karoviertel
Around Schanzenstraße and Schulterblatt you will find alternative shops and bars. According to Hamburg Tourism, MINUS at Karolinenstraße 6 is a queer-friendly gelato bar by day and a techno club by night. Away from the Reeperbahn, in St. Pauli, is Toom Peerstall (Clemens-Schultz-Straße 43). Wikivoyage describes it as a schlager bar with an older crowd, while Hamburg Tourism calls it a revived venue for queer events. Ask on the spot what is on.
Magnus-Hirschfeld-Centrum and counselling
If you want more than a night out, the Magnus-Hirschfeld-Centrum (mhc, Borgweg 8 in Barmbek) is a meeting place for queer people of all ages, with a café, a bistro and a library. According to Wikivoyage it is open Monday to Thursday from 17:30 to 23:00 and on Friday from 17:30 to 01:00.
For sexual health there is Hein & Fiete at Pulverteich 21, a free counselling and testing centre you can use anonymously (Monday to Friday, 16:00 to 20:00, per Wikivoyage).
Pride and parties
Hamburg Pride takes place every year in late July or early August, with a demonstration through the city centre followed by a street festival. On parade day there is also the Vogelball, a queer masked ball. According to Hamburg Tourism, the 2025 edition was the twelfth. Dates for next year are on the organisers' sites.
Safety and the law
Hamburg is considered very liberal. Wikivoyage points out, however, that some groups reject homosexuality and attacks can never be fully ruled out. Since 2006, Germany's General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) has also protected people from discrimination because of sexual identity. If you experience an attack, call 110 in an emergency and contact a counselling service afterwards.
Culture, tours and saunas
If you want something for the daytime, you have options. Hamburg Tourism lists B-Movie (Brigittenstraße 5) and Metropolis Kino (Kleine Theaterstraße 10) as cinemas and Kampnagel (Jarrestraße 20) as an international production house. According to Wikivoyage, kultkieztouren (Schmuckstraße 9) offers tours with drag performances in St. Pauli. Unterstrich Tätowierungen (Kirchenallee 25) in St. Georg is a studio for queer customers.
On saunas, the platform misterb&b names Dragon Sauna and Apollo Sauna as the two longest-established gay saunas in the city, plus the newer Men's Heaven Spa. That comes from a booking platform, so check it before you go.
