About the LGBT Scene in Hong Kong
Hong Kong's queer venues are spread across the city rather than packed into one district. Most are in Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok. Bars, clubs and massage places often sit on upper floors of commercial towers, with a building name and floor but little to see from the street.
On the Kowloon side, Boo Bar in Jordan is a fixture. It is on the fifth floor of Pearl Oriental Tower on Nathan Road and caters almost entirely to gay men. In Tsim Sha Tsui, the men's club Arena, which focuses on fetish, is in Wing Hing Mansion on Granville Circuit. Le Male, in Tsimshatsui Mansion on Nathan Road, sells magazines, books, underwear, toys and films.
For saunas and massage, gay guides list Heaven Spa in the Lamma Centre on Parkes Street and Aloha Spa in the Studio Building on Carnarvon Road, both in Kowloon.
Beyond the commercial venues there is active community work. The Hong Kong Pride Parade committee runs a members' club, 香港Pride友會, and a community development network that links groups and initiatives. Its website also covers issues such as the legal position of same-sex couples.
The age of consent is sixteen for everyone. The Domestic Violence Ordinance also covers same-sex couples, and court rulings have given couples some rights, such as spousal visas. There is still no legal recognition of partnerships, despite a Court of Final Appeal ruling: the Legislative Council voted down the government's bill. Polls show support for same-sex marriage has risen considerably, with a majority now in favour. Drugs of any kind are illegal, and police do carry out raids.
