The NS-Dokumentationszentrum in the EL-DE-Haus is Germany's largest local memorial dedicated to victims of National Socialism. Originally built as a residential and commercial building, the structure served as the central headquarters and prison of the Cologne Gestapo. Today, it houses a comprehensive permanent exhibition exploring Cologne's history during the Nazi era, covering topics such as the seizure of power, propaganda, daily life, racist persecution, and resistance. The most striking feature is the former basement prison, preserved with over 1,800 contemporary inscriptions left by inmates, providing powerful testimony to the horrors of Nazi terror. Operating as a museum, memorial site, and research institution, the center regularly presents special exhibitions, lectures, and educational programs. It commemorates approximately half of Cologne's 16,000 Jewish citizens who perished under Nazi rule, as well as Sinti, Roma, and other persecuted groups.
