About the LGBT Scene in Cartagena de Indias
Cartagena de Indias is the capital of the Bolívar department on Colombia's Caribbean coast and has a little over 900,000 inhabitants. Its port, fortresses and old town have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
There is no single gay district. Almost all queer and queer-friendly venues are in the walled old town (El Centro) and the neighbouring district of Getsemaní, where many guesthouses also explicitly welcome gay guests. Gay guides mostly name The City Club in Getsemaní and Avatar Disco Bar, as well as Gabanna Bar Club in Pie del Cerro and Roma Club on Avenida Santander. The busiest nights are Thursday to Saturday.
The community is easiest to reach through Caribe Afirmativo, an LGBTI organisation for the Caribbean region with its own coordinator in Cartagena, and Fundación Casa Mangle. At the end of June the Marcha del Orgullo moves through the city; in 2026 around 600 people marched from CAI de Ceballos to Plaza de Todos. Colombia's legal situation is good: same-sex couples have been able to marry since 2016.
