The Schwules Museum is Berlin's pioneering cultural institution dedicated to the history and culture of LGBTQ+ communities. As the world's first museum of its kind, it comprehensively documents the life stories, artistic works, and social movements of gay, lesbian, trans, bisexual, and queer people. The museum houses one of Europe's largest queer archives and an extensive library featuring academic publications and lifestyle magazines spanning decades.
Exhibitions blend artistic installations with photographs, newspaper clippings, video recordings, and personal artifacts that bring queer history to life. Beyond its permanent exhibition on Berlin's LGBTQ+ history, the museum features rotating special exhibitions exploring themes such as feminism and queer experiences across different nations. Evening lectures address diverse topics including coming-out experiences and historical persecution. Located in Schöneberg's vibrant rainbow neighborhood, the Schwules Museum serves as an essential starting point for exploring Berlin's LGBTQ+ cultural scene and offers visitors an intimate yet comprehensive perspective on queer heritage.
