The AIDS Memorial "Verletzte Liebe" at Peterskirchhof in Frankfurt am Main stands as a poignant tribute to those lost to the immunodeficiency disease AIDS. Designed by artist Tom Fecht, it occupies a corner of the St. Peter's Church retaining wall, with the words "Verletzte Liebe" carved into the stone. Approximately 600 handmade iron nails, each uniquely forged, are hammered into the sandstone wall—each representing an individual who died from AIDS in Frankfurt.
The atmosphere evokes quiet reflection and reverence, creating a space for contemplation in the heart of the historic city center. On World AIDS Day, visitors gather to lay red roses and drive in new nails for those who passed in the previous year. Its proximity to the Frankfurt Angel, a monument to victims of homosexual persecution, enhances its cultural resonance. "Verletzte Liebe" invites visitors to ponder loss, community, and the enduring need for awareness, serving as a timeless emblem of empathy within Frankfurt's cultural landscape.
