The Homomonument in Amsterdam stands as a powerful memorial in the heart of the city, located on the banks of the Keizersgracht canal near the Westerkerk church at Westermarkt. Designed by Dutch artist Karin Daan, the monument consists of three interconnected triangles made of pink granite, forming a larger triangle that functions as a walkable artwork embedded in the ground. The pink triangle symbolizes the badges that homosexuals were forced to wear in concentration camps, but has been reclaimed by the LGBTQ+ community as a symbol of resistance and pride.
This was the world's first monument dedicated to people persecuted because of their sexual orientation. The three triangles represent past, present, and future, with one extending into the canal while the others lie on the pavement. Throughout the year, visitors leave flowers, candles, and messages at this site of remembrance. The monument serves as a profound symbol of resilience and solidarity, honoring all those who have suffered persecution and celebrating those who continue to fight for freedom and equality. It stands as a call to society to remain vigilant against oppression and discrimination.
